GENERAL WEATHER STATEMENT
UPDATED BY ENVIRONMENT CANADA. REGIONAL CENTRE TORONTO ONTARIO.
6.33 PM EDT MONDAY 10 AUGUST 1998.

IT WAS ANOTHER ACTIVE WEATHER DAY ACROSS SOUTHERN AND EASTERN
ONTARIO AS A VERY MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIRMASS PROVED TO BE
VERY CONDUSIVE FOR LOCALLY SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS.
WATCHES AND WARNINGS WERE ISSUED FOR TWO DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT
TYPES OF STORMS.

OVER EASTERN ONTARIO A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH WAS ISSUED
AT 10.09 AM FOR REGIONS FROM ALGONQUIN PARK SOUTHWARD TO
LAKE ONTARIO THEN EASTWARD TO OTTAWA. THE WATCH INDICATED
THE MAIN THREAT FROM THESE STORMS WAS THE POTENTIAL FOR
VERY HEAVY RAINFALL WITH LOCAL AMOUNTS IN EXCESS OF 50 MM.

AT THE SAME TIME A WATCH WAS ISSUED FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN
AND SOUTH-CENTRAL ONTARIO AS A SHARP COLD FRONT WAS POISED
TO COLLIDE WITH THE VOLATILE AIRMASS ALREADY IN PLACE.
UNLIKE THE STORMS IN EASTERN ONTARIO THESE STORMS WOULD
HAVE MORE ENERGY WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR HAIL WIND GUSTS
IN EXCESS OF 90 KM/H AND INTENSE LIGHTNING.

AT 12.20 PM THE FIRST WARNINGS OF THE DAY WERE ISSUED FOR
EASTERN ONTARIO FOR A SWATH FROM CENTRAL HASTINGS TO PRESCOTT
RUSSELL COUNTIES. RADAR DATA INDICATED A LINE OF TRAINING
ECHOES WITH THE HEAVIEST AXIS FROM WESTPORT TO KEMPTVILLE TO
HAWKESBURY. AT 2.03 PM THE WARNING WAS SHIFTED ONE TIER OF
COUNTIES SOUTHWARD TO INCLUDE REGIONS CLOSER TO THE ST.
LAWRENCE.

MEANWHILE OVER SOUTHERN ONTARIO THE FIRST CELLS DEVELOPED
ALONG THE COLD FRONT OVER LAKE HURON NEAR THE NOON HOUR.
THIS PROMPTED A WARNING FOR GREY AND BRUCE COUNTIES WHICH
WAS ISSUED AT 1.19 PM.  SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUED
TO ERUPT IN ADVANCE OF THE FRONT AND BETWEEN 4.46 PM AND
5.01 PM WARNINGS WERE ISSUED FOR DURHAM AND SOUTHERN SIMCOE
COUNTIES AND FROM EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO SOUTHWEST OF
LONDON.
