From TheWeatherNetwork:

Possible tornado touches down in Midland, Ontario

Tonight's severe storm risk across Ontario
Andrea Stockton, staff writer

June 23, 2010 — Our StormWatch continues for southern Ontario. We've received numerous calls about a possible tornado in Midland, Ontario.

Watch for intense lightning and thunder
All the ingredients were there for this to be a night of active weather across southern Ontario. We've recently received numerous calls on our StormLine about a tornado touching down in Midland, Ontario. Some viewers say trees have been uprooted and damage is evident. There are unofficial reports of a state of emergency in place. Police and ambulance have been dispatched to Smith Camp Trailer Park. We'll have more details on this as the story unfolds.
A low pressure system in the United States continues to track towards the province.
“Scattered thunderstorms moved through areas like London, Stratford and Orangeville this afternoon,” says Brian Dillon, a meteorologist here at The Weather Network. “This first wave was accompanied by the warm front sweeping through.”
The next round of active weather is now expected into the evening and overnight hours.

Large hail is possible with these storms
“Winds will be picking up from the southwest ahead of the cold front,” explains Dillon. He says this second wave of storms will be much more intense.
“Gusts up to 100km/h or more, heavy downpours and small hail are all possible and of course when there's severe thunderstorms there's always a chance for tornadic activity as well,” notes Dillon.
The risk of severe weather extends from southwestern Ontario, north to the Bruce Peninsula and across the Greater Toronto Area.

As residents of a picturesque town in Ontario's cottage country begin clearing snapped trees, downed powerlines and destroyed homes, Environment Canada has confirmed a tornado caused the damage.
Midland, located on the southeast edge of Georgian Bay, was hit by a severe storm shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday evening. According to Environment Canada, details are still unknown, but eyewitness accounts and images of the damage confirm a tornado touched down in the area.
"The exact timing of this tornado, its length, width and fujita scale damage rating are not known at this point," Environment Canada said in a statement.

Although it was part of a severe weather system that put much of the province under a rare "red alert", local residents say it came "out of the blue."
"People here are saying they had no warning whatsoever," CTV's John Vennavally-Rao told CTV's Canada AM in an interview from Midland early Thursday.
"There was just a lot of heavy rain and then suddenly people say they saw a vortex of debris that just came through part of town and caused all this damage."
A trailer park in the town appears to have borne the brunt of the storm's damage.
Fresh from a tour of the ravaged mobile home park, Midland Mayor Jim Dower said damage to the approximately 360 units there is extensive.
"It looks like about 60 have been totally destroyed and another 60 per cent badly damaged," Downer told Canada AM Thursday morning.
In the aftermath of the storm, Downer declared a state of emergency for his town of approximately 16,300 residents. While search teams are still scouring the wreckage of the trailer park, hunting for any victims of the storm, the mayor remains optimistic everyone is accounted for.
"We just want to be absolutely sure," Downer said.
Environment Canada is also sending its own damage assessment teams to Midland and areas east of the town on Thursday.
Emergency Management Ontario had issued a red alert Wednesday evening for a large swath of central Ontario. From Penetanguishene to the north, Barrie to the south, Collingwood to the west, and Orillia to the east, residents were asked to seek shelter from the potentially severe weather.
Environment Canada also had issued a tornado warning for Barrie, Orillia and the Penetanguishene area, a warning that extended northwards to the Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes area later in the evening. All tornado warnings in Ontario were dropped overnight.
The threat of severe weather continued Thursday, however, as Emergency Management Ontario issued another "Red Alert" for the areas of Port Carlin, Port Severn, Rosseau and Killbear Park. Citing the threat of severe thunderstorms, residents in those areas were warned to seek shelter until the alerts were rescinded shortly before 10 a.m.
The storm struck just hours after the area was shaken by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake centred in rural Quebec.
