Default Destroyed Barns near Smiths Falls - August 29, 2018

Environment Canada looked into the two barns that were destroyed near Smiths Falls on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 and determined the culprit to be a downburst with estimated winds of up to 170km/h. Below is the summary from EC as posted on Thursday, August 30, 2018.

Ontario Storm Prediction Centre has concluded that a downburst
occurred on August 29th in Eastern Ontario.

The following is a summary of weather event information received by
Environment and Climate Change Canada.


Approximately 10 km north of Smiths Falls

Event description:

A severe thunderstorm produced damaging winds at around 1:00 P.M.
just north of Smiths Falls on Wednesday, August 29th. The wind
damage affected an area with a diameter of approximately 500 metres.
Based on the damage survey conducted by engineers from Western
University, the maximum wind speed was estimated at 170 kilometres
per hour.

Damage reports include:

Two demolished barns

Tree damage
