The National Weather Service will be implementing a new experimental tiered tornado warning format at five NWS offices located in Topeka, KS - Wichita, KS - Kansas City, MO - Springfield, MO - and St. Louis, MO beginning April 2, 2012.

It is hoped if this works, the NWS will switch over to a threat-based tornado warning, and severe tstorm warning, format based on levels of severity.

NWS currently issues tornado/tstorm warnings with a short paragraph that outlines where a storm is and what the storm is capable of producing or has produced. This is also followed by cities and towns in the path of the storm.

The new experimental format will reduce that paragraph to a sentence or two with what the storm is doing. It will then be followed by what hazards are to be expected, source of confirmation, and impact conditions. If a tornado has been confirmed, it will also outline the damage threat as "significant" or "catastrophic".
