Not felt here! And north St. Catharines is right on a fault line too. 'Found that out after the last earthquake like 10yrs ago.

And I'm only like 15miles away from downtown Toronto.

Toronto — Globe and Mail Update Published on Wednesday, Jun. 23, 2010 1:46PM EDT Last updated on Wednesday, Jun. 23, 2010 2:03PM EDT

<!-- /#credit --> There are reports of an earthquake in various parts of Ontario and Quebec, including Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. The Toronto newsroom of The Globe and Mail shook just before 1:45 p.m. EDT. The Ottawa newsroom was evacuated at about 1:43 p.m.
Twitter users as distant as Springfield, Massachusetts and Traverse City, Michigan reported feeling tremors. A Globe reporter in Montreal said that city also shook.
The earthquake rattled buildings in Ottawa, where the streets are crowded with office workers who evacuated their workplaces.
An eyewitness saw items flying off the shelves at a pharmacy in Gatineau, QC.
“We felt the building shake. It was actually it was pretty serious. It was definitely the strongest quake that I ever felt,” said Dennis Choquette, a Globe and Mail online editor based in Ottawa.
The shaking lasted about 15 seconds, Mr. Choquette said.
The severity of the earthquake is not yet known. It is not yet known whether there have been any reports of injuries.
More to come

There's already a Wikipedia entry for it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Ontario_earthquake

The 2010 Central Canada earthquake (Big Bertha) occurred on June 23, 2010, lasted about 15 seconds, and was felt across the Greater Toronto Area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Toronto_Area) and in Ottawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottawa), Ontario (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario) and in Montreal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal), Quebec (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec) but Sango did not feel it. It was even felt as far North as Sudbury (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudbury). The Globe and Mail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globe_and_Mail) reported that "Twitter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter) users as distant as Springfield, Massachusetts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield,_Massachusetts) and Traverse City, Michigan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traverse_City,_Michigan) reported feeling tremors."[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Ontario_earthquake#cite_note-0) This quake occured within minutes of quakes occuring in South Carolina, Southern California, and Southern Maryland.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]
The magnitude of the earthquake is said to be around 5.5 on the Richter scale. May have been cause by a poorly timed joke involving a whoopee cushion. [2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Ontario_earthquake#cite_note-1)

I felt it here in Kitchener! I was sitting at the table with my laptop and it began to wobble... it's pretty rickety so I wondered at first if it was finally falling apart. :P Then I realized the fan looked like it was moving and the building itself seemed to be wobbling a little... At first I wondered if people were doing work upstairs or something, but obviously that shouldn't cause an entire building to shake - lol. Was quite a surprise!

I felt the last quake in 2002 was it? Didn't feel this one, how disappointing. All my friends and family felt it. My mothers office shook just down the street.

Felt reports in Boston now.

Eabie, welcome to Ontario, lol. Though rare, we're all sitting on fault lines that shake every few decades. Strange, isn't it? There was a 6.3 in 1984 I think it was.

City Hall in Windsor was evacuated, and I felt my house shaking in La Salle.

Thank you! It was my first earthquake. :) If we don't get any storms today (looking like more and more of a possibility it seems, sadly) then this won't exactly compensate, but it does help a little. :P Especially cool that it seems like such a rare event here - not since 2002.

Not 2002, but 2000, and if was a 5.5.

And the 6.3 was a 6.0 in 1990.

CP24 is talking about it, lol.

EDIT: Spooky, I'm sensing a trend!!

1990

I was at the Fairview Mall in St. Catharines when it happened. Everyone just stood there staring at each other, then someone screamed it was a earthquake and everyone was fanning out from the centre of the mall towards the sides. It was pretty epic, can today get any better? Supposedly, Welland just got hit again around 2:30 with a tremor.

I never felt anything and I'm like 2 miles from Fairview. Weird.

Hehe, "Welland" never got an earthquake. Quakes cover a radius of hundreds of miles, not specific towns :)

The only quake I remember is coming home from work in early afternoon about 15 yrs ago. It was about 3pm on a sunny day and I was downstairs on the couch when the walls started rattling. It was too much vibration to have just been a big truck going by. I went outside and one of my neighbors was walking down her driveway and asked me "did you feel that?".

Nothing today though.

Yeah, you live in Port, I remember. Like 5 mins from my house. Yeah that is weird. A bunch of other peoples I know in the St. Catharines area also felt it, all the way in the west end and in Meritt. Though I have a friend who was in the Falls and didn't feel it.

Ya I felt that one. CP24 said it was 1998 now, not 2000, that changes the every 10 yr thing. Darn!

O-Train tracks have been damaged, Ottawa train service is offline.

Also, minor building damage in Gatineau, looks much like the damage after the Illinois 5.2 last year, or was it 2008?

Well, I live in Leamington Ontario and I can tell you that at approximately 2:30pm I felt the whole floor moving underneath me. I didn't know what it was and passed it off as being over tired, but then I felt it a second time within seconds of the first one. I still felt that maybe it was me not feeling well and then heard the news! We just had a devastating tornado here on June 6th and now feel this earthquake, certainly makes you wonder what is happening to our world!!

CTV.ca News Staff
Date: Wed. Jun. 23 2010 5:23 PM ET
An earthquake has rocked buildings and sent people fleeing into the streets in an area ranging across a large swath of Central Canada and the northeastern U.S.
There are reports the 5.0-magnitude quake was felt in Montreal, Windsor, Ottawa and Toronto. The U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center is getting reports the quake was felt throughout New York State, Vermont, Massachusetts and Ohio.
Natural Resources Canada has confirmed a "minor" quake struck the region just before 1:45 p.m. ET.
It was centred at a depth of 18 kilometres, about 53 kilometres north-northeast of Ottawa.
While there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in major city centres, the town of Gracefield, Que. declared a state of emergency after the quake damaged seven buildings, including civic administration offices, a church and a grocery store.
Residents of the tiny western Quebec town, which is close to the quake's epicenter, ran into the streets, but no one was injured.
Bruce Presgrave, a spokesperson with the Earthquake Information Center, said though quakes in the area are rare, the region is an active seismic zone.
"With typical building construction in North America, magnitude fives do not usually cause major damage," Presgrave told CTV.ca in a telephone interview from Colorado. "But if they are close to a city they can cause things like broken windows and things being knocked off shelves."
Earlier Tuesday, word broke that a bridge collapsed into a river north of Buckingham, Que., northeast of Ottawa. No one was injured.
Via Rail is also warning passengers travelling east of Kingston that they will experience delays due to the quake.
"Trains travelling east of Kingston will experience (a) 2.5 hour delay for infrastructure inspection due to (the) Quebec-Ontario earthquake," says a travel advisory on the company's website.
In Ottawa, a live news conference on Parliament Hill was interrupted as reporters fled the room, which was clearly seen shaking on camera.
Environment Minister Jim Prentice was in the middle of an interview with CTV News when "suddenly my chair was moving."
"So it was pretty significant, it was quite a shake. Fortunately I was at the end of the interview and we all vacated the building," Prentice said.
The quake disrupted a Senate session. Conservative Senator Lowell Murray said he and his colleagues were debating energy issues when chandeliers in the upper chamber began to sway.
"Initially we thought it might have been an airplane crashing into the building," Murray told the Canadian Press.
"But we were standing around wondering what was going on. And I quickly realized it was an earthquake. And then everybody started shouting out, out, out."
CTV's Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife said CTV staff fled the downtown building where the bureau is located and spilled onto a street, to where hundreds of others had also fled.
CTV's Graham Richardson said there are so far no reports of any damage in Ottawa.
Michelle Honsberger was working on the 10th floor of an Ottawa highrise when the building began to shake.
"Just out of nowhere you feel this incredible shock, it was terrifying, the building was moving back and forth," Honsberger told CTV News Channel. "Everyone immediately jumped out of their cubicles and said, ‘What was that, what's going on?' We didn't even wait for an official alarm. People start evacuating immediately, running down the stairs."
It is not clear if the tremor will affect plans for a visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is scheduled to arrive in Ottawa Wednesday afternoon.
In Huntsville, Ont., where G8 summit preparations are underway, OPP Sgt. Pierre Chamberland said nothing was felt in the area, but said security officials plan for everything, including earthquakes.
In Toronto, workers spilled out of office buildings across the city into a heat wave that had temperatures reaching 36 C with the humidex.
"I was in my office at the time and the floor began to shake and it felt like it was sort of on water," one witness told CTV Toronto. "It was quite disturbing."
The City of Toronto issued a statement Tuesday afternoon saying that after an initial assessment, there appears to be no major damage to city infrastructure. The Toronto Transit Commission and other regional transit services said there was no damage to their facilities and there were no interruptions in service.
In New York City, emergency officials said they are investigating several reports of shaking buildings. Residents in parts of New Jersey and Michigan also reported feeling the tremor.
Eastern Canada quakes
There are two seismic zones in the region, according to the Earthquake Information Center's Bruce Presgrave: the St. Lawrence Valley seismic zone, and a seismic zone that runs up the Ottawa Valley.
According to Presgrave, one of the largest earthquakes ever in North America was a magnitude 7 that hit the Charlevoix, Que. region in 1663.
Other quakes that have hit the region include:

A 6.5-magnitude tremor just south of Chicoutimi, Que., which shook homes as far away as Toronto on Nov. 25, 1988.
A 5.6-magnitude tremor that caused considerable damage in both Cornwall, Ont. and Massena, N.Y.
A 6.2-magnitude tremor about 10 kilometres east of Temiscaming, Que., triggered small landslides close to its epicenter.
