Storms of June, 1999
June 1999 will go down in the books as one of the most inactive storm
months I've witnessed. The majority of the weather has been hot and
humid, but with nothing to trigger any active weather it's was a very slow
month... 2 confirmed tornados which is quite suprising considering
there weren't many thunderstorms in the the southern areas of Ontario...
June 2nd - Severe thunderstorms, confirmed tornado
A hot and humid airmass covered most of southern
Ontario as a cold front pushed through, triggering scattered thunderstorms,
some of which became severe. A possible tornado touched down in the
Wiarton area. The Toronto Star reported the following:
June 3, 1999
Ministry investigates suspected tornado
WIARTON, Ont. (CP) -- An Environment Canada official
is investigating a suspected tornado that blew apart a barn in the Bruce
Peninsula on
Wednesday. Meteorologist Mike Leduc
said that even though no one saw a funnel cloud, the ministry was
examining the damage today to determine if a tornado did touch down.
A severe thunderstorm dropped more than five centimetres of rain in 20
minutes around noon
Wednesday in the Wiarton area. Melanie Gilbert
of Purple Valley, just outside Wiarton, said their 20 by 30 metre barn
was ripped to pieces and a combine tractor was tossed about 20 metres through
the air during the storm. Gilbert estimated the damage at about $60,000.
Note: this tornado was confirmed by Environment Canada
June 25th - Confirmed tornado
I didn't even know about this one until someone
posted info about it on the wx-chase-can list. Environment Canada
confirmed a tornado touchdown just east of Ottawa near the town of St.
Albert.
